I originally started The Fitness Nook (formally One + One) because I wanted to offer fitness classes to the gals that I live in the same/or close communities with. The same gals that I go to church with, see at the library and attended school functions with, for a lot of years. I’ve been teaching fitness classes (Pilates, Yoga, Barre, step and way back in the day, straight aerobics) since the 1990’s.
Besides for teaching fitness classes in Mound City, and now again in Fort Scott, I work as the Wellness Coordinator at Johnson County Community College (JCCC). At JCCC, I get to focus on employee wellness (physical, financial, social and mental health). I’m the wife to Mat, and momma of four amazing kids who are now adults, and now have an awesome son-in-law, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter! We also have a dog named Maya.
I started my fitness and health journey in high school when I started running. I wasn’t much of a natural athlete, but I loved to hit the gravel road with my walkman. In college, I found my place in a step aerobics class. Music, simple choreography, and a step were my jam! That experience led to me teaching fitness classes and working as a personal trainer. I graduated from college with a major in recreation therapy and fitness management.
After all these years, I still love to share my passion for helping people, especially women, feel and move better in their bodies. And now, being in my 50’s, I truly know how to help women who are doing all the “right things,” but can’t seem to reach their fitness goals like they could when they were younger. I see you and I understand.
There is more to it than counting calories and cardio. Stress, our hormones, strength, mobility… all the things that you may hear or read about when trying to figure out what to do for your health… all are addressed in my 45-60 minute classes. We don’t have a lot of spare time, and our minutes matter, and I have worked to create classes that are challenging, fun and have all the requirements to help you reach your wellness goals.
Giving Back!
Giving back matters to me. One of the ways that I choose to give back is donating a small portion of each month’s earnings to the Village of Hope’s Training Center (in Guatemala). Our church has made many trips to Village of Hope, to help support the amazing workers and founders of Village of Hope. They have started a training center, that helps offer skills for the young women, so they can support themselves and their children, when they age out of the orphanage.
